1948 years (2008 – 60)

According to Seder Olam Rabbah and the Jewish rabbinical society, Abraham was born 1948 years after Adam instead of 2008 (251 x 8), for a difference of 60 years (2008 – 1948 = 60). They had subtracted 60 years between Abraham and his father by saying his father was 70, instead of 130, when Abraham was born. Without subtracting the 60 years, Abraham would have been born 2008 (251 times 8) after Adam. Abraham would be 502 (not 505), and Isaac would be 402 years old if they had lived until the exodus.

Note: Isaac was likely weaned at the age of two, 400 years before the exodus.

2450 years (2510 - 60)

Another view in Jewish chronology says there were 2450 years from Adam to the exodus instead of 2510 (2510 minus 60 = 2450). This is half of 4900 years. 2450 is equal to 49 jubilees of 50 years each or 50 jubilees of 49 years each. Again, if the missing 60 years were replaced, there would be 2510 years from Adam to the flood. The confusion stems from two conflicting sources:

Genesis 11:4 says Abraham was 75 when his father died at age 205; so his father was 130 when Abraham was born.

Genesis 11:26 says his father was 70 when he had Abraham, Nahor and Haran.

These examples give us other clues that the exodus was in a sabbatical or jubilee year, in the year, 2510 after Adam.

Jacob’s 14 Years and Joseph’s 14 years

From another angle, Abraham was born 352 years after the flood and was 100 when he had Isaac, and Isaac was 60 when he had Jacob, and Jacob was 130 when his family entered Egypt during the second year of famine. This makes 642 years from the Flood to entering Egypt (352 from the flood to Abraham + 100 + 60 + 130 = 642). 212 (not 215) more years would complete 854 (122 x 7) years from the flood to the exodus. 1656 years to the flood plus 854 years to the exodus equals 2510 years (251 x 10) (1656 + 854 = 1510).

From another angle, Abraham was born 352 years after the flood and was 100 at Isaac’s birth; Isaac was 60 at Jacob’s birth, and Jacob was 77 when he began to serve 14 years to marry Leah and Rachel. These add up to 588 years (12 jubilees) plus one year (352 + 100 + 60 + 77 = 589). 589 would be the jubilee year.

Joseph was born 14 years later (when Jacob was 91) and was 30 when the seven fat years began in Egypt. He was 39 when his family came to Egypt in the second year of seven lean years, when his father was 130. This makes 352 + 100 + 60 + 91 + 39 = 642 years.

Again there were 212 years from Jacob’s entry into Egypt until the exodus, and there were 854 years from the flood to the exodus (642 + 212 = 854).

Josephus’ 2510 Years to the Exodus

Josephus, a multi-lingual, Jewish historian of 70 AD, confirms the 2510 years from Adam to the exodus.  He says that from Adam to the temple there were 3102 years, and, from the exodus to the temple, 592 years. So there were 2510 years from Adam to the exodus (3102 – 592 = 2510) (Josephus, Antiquities of the Jews, 8.3.1).

How long were the Israelites in Egypt? Joseph was 39 when his family arrived in Egypt, when his father, Jacob, was 130. They resided there for 212 years and wandered in the wilderness 39 years, until Moses removed to conquer the land east of the Jordan in the 40th year. Therefore, the period in Egypt and the wilderness was 251 years (212 + 39 = 251).
